Interesting. I still maintain 'pulling' the US is the best strategy. How many millions of Americans do we need that know the colour of Brad Pitt's eyes but not the basics of oil production? Things won't change as long as the majority of the world population is uninformed or in denial.

I remember watching 9/11 unfold and thinking the twin towers were a strange target other than having stunning visual impact. The Saudi's aren't unintelligent people. If they wanted maximum choas surely they would have targeted a financial centre, something that was going to have far reaching repercussions. I was also never satisfied with the explanation of why the twin towers collapsed.

Matt doesn't believe that the government would sacrifice 3000 of it's own people but I think any government would readily consider collaterol damage in exchange for hugh financial gains. The Bush Administration (I don't say Bush himself because he's just a puppet) is as much a tyrant as Hitler ever was. What I think is really scary is when you get these tyrants going after nuclear capable countries like North Korea who's people are just as blinded by propoganda. I totally believe it's the Americans who will initiate a nuclear war.

I think Aussies have an advantage living on an isolated island. Most Americans don't even know we exist. The country is, or at least can be, self-sufficient (apart from oil production) because of the relatively small population. However, government attitudes need to change. Matt wants to install solar panels but they are extremely expensive. He doesn't understand why they aren't government subsidised. They only began subsidising rain-water tanks after several year's drought and getting close to dire water shortage situation. I said it's just another way of controlling the population. We watched a video about a power generator fuelled by magnets that is set to revolutionise the power industry but unless the designers get some serious financial backing, it will be squashed by big brother.

Even for those of us that would like to become more self-sufficient and move to a more rural area with land for growing crops and a dam for water, we're tethered by employment. Matt already commutes 3 hours a day for work. We need jobs to pay off the expensive mortgages which fuels the economy.

I suspect that as peak oil realy starts to take effect something else will be blamed for the problems. Either global warming or some trumped up enemy like Iran or China. In fact it is probably in the USAs best interests to take out China as soon as possible before they use even more oil and/or become a powerful military force.

I'm not to sure about 9/11 meself. There is a lot of evidence that it was staged or allowed to happen though. Suicide bombers tend to work alone. What is the chances of getting 19 people to martyr themselves all in one go without 1 or 2 of them having some doubts and changing their mind? That all US fighters were on training exercise on that day is also statisticly improbable.
There have been plenty of cases in the past of governments using false flag attacks on their own citizens to create an enemy. If the US can invade Iraq on a total lie (WMDs) then they can kill their own people. They probably have a better understanding of the implications of what is going to play out in the future than most of us. Drastic situations need drastic measures to rectify.

I dont know if Australia is a good place to be if things get bad. What about fresh water supply? I heard they want to build desalination plants for all the big cities but these are energy intensive.
Your also to close to China for my likeing.
I'm suprised they subsidize rain water tanks. In some US states where rainwater is low it is illegal to collect.

You can never realy get self sufficient anyway even with acres of land, it has been tried. What is interesting is reading how people coped with previous economic disasters like the Argentinian economic colapse in 2000, Zimbabwe now and the collapse of the soviet union. Theres lots of handy bits of info you can glean this way. People rarely starved as they were always able to find something. Luxury foods, tobacco, alcohol and fuel became bartered for items.

I'm not too sure about fresh water. That's something that largely depends on climate. I think there a desalination plant is currently under construction, something that was initiated by the previous government as a result of the drought. Recycling plants are also a popular idea.

I think Australia has a good relationship with China at the moment but it's largely a service one and of course that all could change in an instant. I think the Beijing Olympics are going to be interesting from a political viewpoint.
